Backstory...
It occurs to me that I probably should have elaborated a bit more, but it's 1am, and I have to work in the morning...

Character Name: Shrapnel Shrike
Character Type: Mutation/Scrapper

Enter the Shrike...
"A volunteer in one of Crey Inc.'s biological research studies, Thomas Weaver's DNA was intermixed with the hybrid DNA of a beast native to the Rikti's homeworld. The resulting mutation caused Weaver to manifest boney spikes along his body, and the ability to regenerate from physical harm. The experiment however failed when applied to all other subjects. Something unique to Weaver's physiological makeup had interacted unexpectedly with the hybrid DNA. Unwilling to submit to continued testing at the hands of his employers, Crey Inc., Weaver found himself on the streets. Shorlty thereafter, he found steadfast allies in the Black Spiral, and has been working with them ever since.

New Character: Doc Spiral
Going to make a defender Empathy/Psychic. Going to try to make him a decicated team doc ect.

I hear there's a city... It might have heroes...
Picking up my copy today at 4pm when I get off work. I won't be able to use it until 9pm to 10pm tonight when they allow us poor retail people to log in, but once I'm on I'll get in and start making my as yet unnamed Scrapper.

But hey, until then, I'm gonna go over to Skau's place and play a superhero during WWII in his Godlike game, so it's all superheroes all the time for me. :)

Headstart Day 1 Reflections
I popped on over to the good old internet around 8 am and launched the client, just in case there was an update that was ready for my download. Since I am on a 56k dial up I wanted to be ready. Lucky for me there was only a small patch of some 280k.

At 10 am I started clicking on the login, and being that my clock is 6 minutes fast, at 10:06 I logged in and created Dolomite. The process took about 15 minutes and I was off and running. 8 minutes into the game i was exiting the Outbreak final mission and I locked up.

It took 45 minutes to get back in the game as now everyone and theur mother was trying to log in and clogged the pipe to the login server. I finally got in and strted leveling like a mad man.

Around 2:00 I was level 5 ot 6 and we started doing some grouping and some missions. This was alot of fun till around 3:30 when i started seeing lag and rubber banding in the highest instances of many zones. Then I got my first MSD (Map Server Disconnect). After getting back in game I experienced the slow downs and 3 more MSD's in an hour. In an effort to clear this up I completely rebooted.

The rest of the day went prety smooth no more MSD's and I decided to take a break to watch the Sopranos from 9 till 10pm. After returning i worked my way solo through a mission till I encountered a dark melee boss. I absolutely hate those kind. He killed me 5 times before I finally beat him. Soon therafter Imogen joined me and we did some missions then joined forces with Io and did a little street cleaning.

All in all when I logged off at 2am I had reached level 11. Imogen was 11 and Io was 12. Our supergroup was started and we were off to a great start. I hope monday is as much fun.

Background for TicTok
Created by the Clockwork King to be a weapon of mass distruction he sent TicTok loose on the city. It was a dark and stormy night and on the way to cause distruction a bolt of ligting struck TicTok frying his memory circuts.

After the reboot he descovered that he was a he. A personality began to form and quickly established itself. Near the end of the awaking The Black Spiral team discovered the lone robot and offered him to join.

Name Change
Daniel Stahl is now playing Io.

Server Status Page
There's a server status page at http://www.cityofheroes.com/servers/index.html.

It only lists Freedom, Justice, Pinnacle, Virtue, Liberty, and Guardian (and none of them are up right now, obviously).

Background
Tzax
Jason Franklin was just an ordinary 13 year old. As ordinary as any kid who built his own Tesla Coil at the age of 10 can be. Jason’s father a Physicist with Cray Industries was more then willing to indulge his only son with anything he wanted as long as it involved science. By age 12 Jason knew more about bimolecular Chemistry then anyone in Paragon City not employed by Cray and he had moved his bedroom into the basement so that there would be enough room for his lab.

Jason’s quiet dreams where shattered one spring day when agents of Portal Corp raided his home they had been watching the large amount of scientific goods entering the house and determined that there must be s secret lab contained there. As the FRT team cleared the house Jason attempted to stop them and one of the agents shoved him down. He crashed through one of his chemistry experiments and straight into his Tesla coil. The agents left him for dead and moved on to the rest of the home.

When Jason came to he could see the world in a different way he could see and manipulate energy in many forms. Tzax made short work of the Portal Corp team and as he waited for the authorities to arrive he wandered past a mirror….. Are those breasts…?

TeamSpeak
checking on the TeamSpeak server tonight I noticed that there's very few channels to chose from and we can not create more. Just in case this proves to be a problem, I've installed the server software on #3 box as a backup plan. I have not, as yet, been able to test it from the outside, but it appears to be running correctly and working here.

Use the search feature to find the Black Spiral TeamSpeak Server, it's a Clan Server. The password is: hero

I'll try and be on the vs4 server early to determine if it's going to be a problem, and I'll leave the Black Spiral server up in case anyone wants to test it.

Speaking of Hero Builder...
Be sure to grab version 1.51 of the Hero Planner - it now has specific data on accuracy modifiers, endurance cost, activation time, recharge time, and range.

Hero Builder
Hero Builder

Key Binding
CoH Warcry has a handy FAQ on key binding, for those who haven't already seen it.
Key Binding

Can someone post a link to the Hero builder program I have heard so much about?

Physical Server Locations
FYI, they just announced the physical locations of all the servers:

East Coast (VA): Freedom, Infinity, Liberty, Pinnacle, Victory
West Coast (CA): Champion, Guardian, Justice, Protector, Virtue

So, it look's like we're good to go with Justice on Sunday.

Mumble .. Mumble .. Mumble
Teamspeak isn't too bad but you do need to fiddle with sensitivity settings and try and get everyone to select the same compression that is native to whatever chanel you are on ... believe me it helps.

Something else you shoul do when speaking start off by talking a little louder than normal to begin whatever you are going to say, you should also be quick and as clear as possible as any pauses cause the software to shut you off and then delay too much restarting so you become garbled. Practice with their playback feature if you have to.

I was able to talk to and receive from Erik just fine, and with kevin I could speak to him fine but could only understand about half of what he said and on occasion there was some weird feedback and echos.

I won't be trying it from home on my dial up, but at work (after hours) I would be inclined to try again.

Acceptance at last
Got a preorder, so I am in for sunday. Virtually of course. we need to set a a test time for the voice client, so I can make sure everything works ok.

In beta I found the blaster to be most playable, followed by the defender. But what a class plays like at 4th level is completely unrelated to what it will play like at 40th. So I will probably start by hitting most of the bases, and seeing what I like.

Proposed

538nm Natural Tanker, (Probly invul/superstrength) "Green is the color of Truth."

Unfortulately Acolyte of Shadow is slightly too long for a name. Shadow Acolyte just isn't as cool. Acolyte of Shdw seems cheesy. Adept of Shadow would work, just need to give myself a promotion. Or maybe go for the later Aco-Light, though I am not as inclined to that. Magic Defender (Radiation/Dark Blast)

Dose Technology Blaster. (Assualt Rifle/Devices)

In beta I also was also intrigued by a Quills Scrapper, but have no concepts on name and such yet.

Buying the Game
Dan S. visited Fry's this evening and they informed him that they should have City of Heroes at Noon on Tuesday (4/27). They apparently have some sort of exclusive deal to sell the game a day early (related to the dev signing events in CA, presumably). No promises, of course, but they seemed pretty sure of themselves.

Game Stop thinks they'll have the game on Wednesday, and lord knows when Best Buy or CompUSA will have it.

The History of Otosan and The Black Spiral
Taking ideas from several of you I've worked out a history of my own character as well as proposal for the origin of the team. Look it over, let me know what you think.

The History of The Black Spiral

Among the founders of the mystical Midnight Squad, one of Paragon City's first crime fighting organizations licensed under the Citizen Crime Fighting Act of 1952 and the first such organization focused upon the arcane arts, was a talented young acolyte who went by the name of The Black Spiral. The Black Spiral specialized in the manipulation of the dark forces summoned forth from the netherworld and was a valuable member of the Midnight Squad's shadowy fight against crime in the years leading up to the Rikti invasion.
With the appearance of this new alien threat, the Midnight Squad first focused its efforts on discovering if this menace was mystical in origin, knowing they were best equipped to deal with such a threat. The Black Spiral was the leading mystic placed in charge of this research and he worked tirelessly on divining the origin of this invading army. When records from old Portal Corps files finally revealed the source of the Rikti forces, the Midnight Squad found itself reeling to play catch-up after focusing much of its attention in the wrong direction. The Black Spiral, along with several other darkness mystics, realized that their offensive capabilities would need time to be tuned for use against new foes and thus began focusing on their defensive powers in an attempt to save as many lives as possible until an effective counter attack could be formulated.
When Dr. Science unveiled his plan to assault the Rikti directly at their source it was the mystics of the Midnight Squad who were tapped to conceal Omega Team and make the critical strike upon the Rikti's main portal. Omega Team's mission was successful in closing the Rikti's portal, but only one member of Omega Team, the invulnerable Ajax, survived to tell the tale.
One year later local entrepreneur James 'Big Papa' Otosan purchased a small building in the commercial section of Paragon City not far from the former Midnight Squad's headquarters with the intention of opening the Black Spiral Tavern in honor of the fallen superhero who gave his life in defence of the city and had once saved James from a vicious mugging at the hands of the Skulls street gang. Hidden in the basement of the building James discovered a secret stash of mystical texts and personal diaries of the original Black Spiral himself. Only a small portion of The Black Spiral's important netherworld research was found and notes from The Black Spiral seem to indicate those materials were lost in the devastating Rikti attack that destroyed the Midnight Squad's headquarters, but there were a great many volumes on other mystical as well as scientific subjects stored in this small library. James took this discovery as a sign that he was meant to continue the heroic work The Black Spiral and the rest of the Midnight Squad had started.
Converting the back room of the half completed tavern into an impromptu headquarters, James secluded himself there and began his study of the mystic arts.
Now James wields his mystic might as the super hero Otosan and has put out the call for other heroic individuals willing to place the safety of others above their own and follow the example set by The Black Spiral.

Rikti Invasion - End of Beta Event
For those of you that may have missed the end of beta event... It was one insane battle ... The Rikti mother ships invaded the city zones and Rikti of varying levels beamed down.

Despite the number of people I experienced very little to no lag most times, of course I knew it was coming so I set my graphics to a lower setting than normal and they despawned all of the cities indiginous spawns.

During the invasion a group of mid level Lost attacked the city hall area where I was at and after the invasion we were treated to a level 30 Hydra called Kracken whos type was Monster instead of Boss, Luitenant or Minion. At the very end a robot called Kraven that was level 40 and may even have been controlled by a Dev appeared and proceded to use a foot stomp for 700 damage whiping out 1/2 of the heroes (all of which seemed to have res insps). Eventually was trapped and we went to work on him. With all the buffs people had going and using an accuracy insp I was able to hit him quite a bit. Even thoug my damage was fairly insignifgant in the long run.

While we were busy with the Kracken and Robot dude, the Rikti beamed up and escabed ... blast them !!!!

Anyway I posted 10 screenshots on imagedump.com under the title Rikti Invasion 1 thru 10 here is a link to them and more images others have posted.

Who wants a body massage?
I will be playing F451 - INV/FIRE Tank

I'm a robot from the future.

I don't know how I joined Black Spiral because I wasn't born yet.

Mr. Body Massage Machine.... GO!

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday
This Sunday, at 12:00 Central Time (which I assume is somewhere within 3 hours in either direction Pacific Time, but you never can tell with those Central people) will be the rise of the CoH servers for those of us with Pre-Order accounts.
Firstly, I'm opening up my house for us to group together and level while yelling at each other in person, make a day of it, hang out.. likely BBQ.. all that stuff. As this is an MMORPG, I'm not too sure how many people can cram into the the same cable modem without causing problems, but I'd guess it can handle a few and I have table space for several. Let me know if you can come.
If you can't make it here, like if you foolishly live in California or something, or just want to stay home, buy yourself a headset with mic and download TeamSpeak for voice chat durring the game. The link's up at the top right... move your mouse over to the right, then go up the page until you see it, it says "Download TeamSpeak".

Orange de jour
Are we still set on the Orange costume color scheme?

And what does our merry band of Cheddites need?

-Dpf

- We're going Black and Orange for the team colors. Keep in mind that you can design your own costume with whatever colors you like and then the "Supergroup Mode" will take your existing costume and switch it to the team colors whenever you like. As to what we need, Blasters and Scrappers would be great, as would a healer, but make what you want to play, that's more important in the long run.

Heroic plans...
Here are the two characters I have planned for now. You can click on the pics for bigger versions (if this thing allows my code).

Lynda Crighton, Dealer in rare manuscripts and antiquities, student of the arcane arts, and enemy of things that go bump in the night. She's a character from my first Champions book, Normals Unbound (though a little less neurotic than the original version ;-) Lynda is a Magic Defender specializing in Healing and Psychic mental attacks, though she may pick up odd spells later as she gets access to power pools.

The plan is for Red Glare to be a Mutant Scrapper right now, but I'm itching to play a blaster so she might change into that. I just don't like the energy blast power tree much, with several of the attacks being "power punches" and such that I expect to be less than useful for a character who isn't supposed to get close to enemies. We'll see.

Is there a way we can send you screen shots of our Characters and you can like it to our names or something Erik?

- Yeah, that should be doable. Just email them to me and I'll rig it up.

In that case
I can go with a Magic Tanker. A metal Golem possesed by a dead mage. To go with the more Magical Spiral feel.

Cory

Girls, Girls, Girls
Here are my likely characters:

1. Imogen - Mutant Controller (Fire Control/Empathy)
2. Inga - Natural Blaster (Assault Rifle/Devices)
3. Marlee - Mutant Defender (Empathy/Dark Blast)

Ninja-tastic!
I can see that I'm going to have to purchase this filthy game, and join up. Sadly, I can't really make with the purchasing until they hurry up and release the game to the general public. I'll probably make a Scrapper of some kind. What server is the Black Spiral to be based on?

With the recent change in how they're going to be doing the pre-release servers, we're not too sure if Infinity (our origional choice for server) will be up on Sunday. As such, we're going to go with Justice as our server of choice.

Captain Valiant!
When the Fifth Column attacked Paragon City in 1941, one of the first heroes to step forward and defend America was Captain Valiant. Sixty years later, his grandson has donned his old costume, and Captain Valiant once more patrolled the streets of Paragon City.

Except that I still don't know what class he'll be. I've tried out Natural Scrapper/Tankers that look as normal as possible (using Super Strength or Martial Arts) and it looks a lot like a comic book hero from the '40s. But I might change my mind and go Blaster. You never know, really.

The Return of Dolomite
I will be playing a natural/tanker invuln/super strength named Dolomite ... but also plan to try a few other character types so we can have some mixed groups from time to time. --Mark

Behold the power of Jon
I am thinking that I will be going with a Magic/Defender Force Fields and Electricity named Mr Strange.

And as I think I will be getting much less playing time then many of you so I will be also making my Sidekick for hire Tzax 13 year old nerd turned hot chick Science/Blaster

Prospective Background Idea
The Black Spiral Clan was born in secrecy, hidden from the greedy eyes and grasping hands of a corrupt Daimyo. This clan of ninjas, monks, and mystics battled from the shadows to free their countrymen from tyranny. Even in victory they remained cloaked in anonymity, refusing the honor and riches that could have been there for the freedom of secrecy. Throughout the centuries they stood silent watch over their people, ensuring that the hand of evil would never again stretch across the land.
Over time, the Black Spiral Clan spread across the world, placing members in key roles in governments, religious orders, and social movements in every country. When the celebrated heroes of Paragon City waged their war for humanity's freedom before the world, even they were unaware of the quiet rituals, blackened blades, and deadly poisons that aided their cause. The Black Spiral Clan gathered all of their forces to face mankind's most deadly foe, sacrificing their very existence to help drive off the Rikti. They battled and died in the shadows, unknown to most, until -insert founder's name here- came across the secret journals of a Black Spiral ninja. After years struggling to unravel the coded language, he finally realized the noble sacrifice that had been made by these silent warriors. He vowed that he would not let their society die out, forming a team of superheroes to carry on their name, and their battle against evil.

I'll probably go with a magic controller- illusion/healing, but I will pick the name on Sunday.

Corys Character
I'm going to be going with a Tech Tanker named Tonq. Invulnerablity/Super strength.

Short version of background:
Mad Scientist turned into a Robot.

Posting
As long as you've signed up on Blogger you should be able to use the "Post" button in the upper right to open a pop-up window that will allow you to post to this page. When you're finished with your post, be sure to hit the "Post and Publish" button to make your post visible on the web site.

I'll continue messing with the graphics later, for now I think this thing is fairly usable as is, feel free to post anything related to the upcoming release and playing of City of Heroes.

Characters
One of the first things we need to do is figure out what types of characters we'll all be playing, as well as list the names we'll be using so we can find each other on Sunday. List your character(s) here and I'll add it to the list over on the side.
